Yellowstone’s northern range is known for its plentiful wildlife and spectacular vistas. It is also full of history, as early visitors in the 1800s reached the park through Gardiner, via train.
This full-day tour will be partly about finding and watching wildlife, but we will also enjoy taking in the scenery, seeing some park history, taking some walks, and learning about the ecosystem. Where we go and what we do will depend on your interests, where wildlife has been spotted in the days before your tour, and possible weather-related road closures.
Some places we may visit during this tour are Mammoth, the Lamar valley, Tower Falls, Dunraven pass, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and Hayden valley. We cannot predict what wildlife you will see, but there is always the chance to see bears, wolves, moose, elk, eagles, otters, and more. It’s very likely you will see bison and pronghorn.

- Good shoes
- If hiking, wear wool socks and a good pair of comfortable shoes or boots.

- No matter what time of year you visit, layers of clothing you can add or remove are crucial. Even in the summer, mornings can be in the 40s or 50s (in degrees Fahrenheit), while afternoons can be in the 80s or 90s.
- Sun protection
- Long sleeves/pants, sunscreen, hat, etc. The sun is powerful out here!
- Rain gear
- Rain can spring up out of nowhere, so having a raincoat and rain pants available is important.
